Mark Terence Lake was jailed for 15 months
A man has been jailed for 15 months after he tried to hijack a car in a bid to escape from police who had arrested him in Wrexham.

In passing sentence, Judge John Rogers told Mark Terence Lake from Wolverhampton, that the town's centre was becoming a no-go area to members of the public because of people like him.

Appearing at Mold Crown Court, Lake admitted affray, criminal damage and escaping from lawful custody.

Police were alerted to Lake's behaviour by a CCTV operator who saw the 21-year-old hurl a drainage grill, a paving slab and a road sign at people passing by.

Officers arrived and arrested him but the defendant ran off as he was being handcuffed.

He was missing for nearly an hour.

During that time he smashed a window at a veterinary practice in a bid to get in and hide.

The judge said Wrexham was "becoming a no-go area".

He was seen running from the area and approach the driver of a car.

Prosecutor Peter Humphrey-Jones said: "The defendant ran across the front of the car, opened the door and lent in.

"Lake was trying to get into the car when the police arrived and apprehended him," he added.

His defence barrister Andrew Green said that his client had become involved in an incident with others who were chasing him.

He added that the incident happened in the early hours and the town centre was deserted.

When imposing a prison sentence Judge Rogers said that Lake had behaved in a "grossly violent manner."
