Asylum-seekers 'run riot' in Australia

The authorities in Australia say there has been another disturbance at a detention centre for refugees.

They say 14 guards were injured when about 100 detainees at the Curtin centre at Derby in north-west Australia smashed furniture and attacked security staff with stones and concrete blocks.

The Justice Minister, Chris Ellison, said one guard was in a serious condition and one detainee was treated for injuries from broken glass.

Mr Ellison said the majority of people who rioted had had their applications for asylum in Australia turned down.

He said police had been called in and the situation was under control. The centre houses more than 300 people awaiting decisions on their applications for asylum.

Similar riots have taken place at the Woomera detention centre in south Australia.
