Spy-charge worker appears in court

A defence worker accused of spying and stealing secret information has made an appearance at the Old Bailey.

Ian Parr who worked for BAe Systems and Avionics based in Basildon, Essex, faces nine charges under the Official Secrets Act, and one theft charge.

The 45-year-old from Rochford, Essex, spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared in court flanked by three dock officers.

The former test co-ordinator was remanded in custody until 15 May.

Official secrets

Mr Parr was arrested on 22 March in a joint operation involving police and the security services.

The spying charges refer to him "obtaining documents prejudicial to the safety and interests of the state which were intended to be passed to the enemy".

Six counts relate to him allegedly obtaining documents and material and three refer to him communicating that material on two separate occasions.

He is also accused of the theft of documents under the Official Secrets Act.

The charges facing Mr Parr under the Official Secrets Act carry a maximum of 14 years in prison.

BAe Systems and Avionics employs 1,300 people and is one of the UK's leading suppliers of civil and military electronic systems.
