Man remanded over pensioner murder
The Howard family car was found in a pub car park
A man has appeared in court accused of murdering a pensioner in her home.
The body of 79-year-old Adelaide Howard was discovered last week in the kitchen of her house at Winterbourne, near Bristol. She had suffered multiple stab wounds. Matthew Newland, 24, of Cedars Way, Winterbourne, was today remanded in custody by Northavon Magistrates Court at Yate.
Mrs Howard was found by her 78-year-old husband, John, in their home in Dragon Road. Mr Howard left home on the morning of Wednesday, 27 March, to play golf, and his wife went shopping. Her husband discovered the body when her returned home that day. The family car was recovered from a nearby public house car park on Friday, and has been examined by forensic experts. Mr Newland will next appear at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, 5 April.
