1997 murder appeal renewed
Police in Greater Manchester have appealed for help to solve the death of a man murdered five years ago.

Trevor Candlin was found stabbed to death at Rhodes Lodges, Middleton at 0900 GMT on Sunday 30 March 1997.

The 41-year-old from Balentia Road, Blackley was openly active in the gay community and officers are keen to trace anyone who knew him at the time.

Detective Inspector Bob Ashton from Greater Manchester Police said: "This was a particularly frenzied and prolonged attack and it is likely the person or persons responsible would have been bloodstained.

"I appreciate it has been five years and many people who may have been actively involved in the gay community in 1997 have now moved on, but I can assure people any contact with officers will be treated in the utmost confidence."

On the night before Mr Candlin was found dead, Saturday 29 March 1997, he is believed to have been at his home at 1900 GMT.

Police need to speak to anyone who saw or spoke to him after that time.

Mystery caller

Officers are especially keen to trace a man who called the incident room at Middleton at the time of the murder.

The man agreed to call back, and gave the name "Peter".

He did not call back and police were unable to trace him.

Det Insp Ashton said: "We believe this man may have vital information regarding the case.

"Although it's been five years since Trevor's murder we are still desperate to solve the case and I would appeal to anyone who has any information, no matter how small or insignificant they may think this is, to contact us."
