Ecuador police probe soccer official's shooting

Police in Ecuador have begun an investigation into the killing on Saturday of a prominent football official, Joselo Rodriguez.

Mr Rodriguez, his wife and teenage son died when three gunmen pulled up to their vehicle and opened fire as they were driving home from a football match in the west of the country. Two daughters survived the attack.

Police say the killings may be linked to an attack last May on Ecuador's national football coach, Hernan Gomez.

Mr Rodriguez, then the president of the second division side, Santa Rita, served six months in prison for his part in the attack.

He was later expelled from Ecuador's football federation. That attack was linked to the former Ecuadorean president, Abdala Bucaram, who has interests in several football clubs.

Mr Bucaram was removed from office in 1997 on grounds of being mentally unfit.
