Man held over pensioner murder
The stolen car was recovered two days after Mrs Howard's murder

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a pensioner found stabbed to death in her home.

The body of 79-year-old Adelaide Howard was discovered in a pool of blood in the kitchen of her home at Winterbourne, near Bristol, last week.

On Sunday a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said a 27-year-old local man had been arrested in connection with her death, and was being questioned by officers.

On Saturday police were informed that a knife had been seen in a nearby road in Hambrook, Bristol.

But an extensive search of the area failed to find the knife, which detectives believe could have been picked up and taken away.

The body of Mrs Howard was found by her 78-year-old husband, John, in their home in Dragon Road.

Mr Howard had left the house at around 0730 GMT on Wednesday, 27 March, to play golf and it is known Mrs Howard went shopping and returned on her bicycle at around 1030 GMT.

But nothing is known about what happened in the following two hours, before her husband discovered the body.

Her car, stolen from the driveway of their house, was recovered from a nearby pub car park on Friday, and is being examined by forensic experts.
