Pay rise for MPs

Members of Parliament are due to receive a two point five per cent annual pay rise, almost double the headline rate of inflation, starting from today.

They're also being given the second half of a £4,000 top-up which they voted themselves last year.

Currently, an MP's salary stands at just over £51,000.

Teachers are paid a little above £28,000 - on average.

Do MPs deserve to be paid more than other public servants like the police and teachers? We asked Martin Bell, the former independent MP.
