'Bug' hospital inquiry launched
The Victoria Infirmary was closed to emegency admissions
An investigation is under way into reports that a hospital in Glasgow where three patients died in a salmonella outbreak breached hygiene standards.
As well as the deaths, up to 300 people were affected by the winter vomiting bug at the Victoria Infirmary on the south side of the city. The Sunday Times raised a list of concerns after sending an undercover reporter posing as a cleaner into the hospital. A spokeswoman for the South Glasgow Hospitals University Trust said the paper's findings would be looked into. 'Specific points' "Certain aspects of the investigation are under way already. However were are waiting for more information on specific points," she added. The Sunday Times said it found spillages, soiled tissues and refuse sacks left unattended for hours on end. Matted hair, dust and dirt was allowed to build up in patients' beds. A day room for patients was clogged with hospital equipment and was used by staff as a smoking area. There was evidence of alcohol being consumed on the premises, according to the paper. Legal action The hospital was closed to new admissions earlier this year after the bug swept through the wards. More than 200 operations were also cancelled at the Victoria and nearby Southern General, where patients were diverted during the outbreak. The deaths of the three men prompted an investigation by public health officials. The family of one of the men, Rudolfo Ionta, 74, from Polmadie in Glasgow, has received a letter from South Glasgow University Hospitals NHS Trust in which it accepts responsibility for his death. The family is taking legal action against the hospital.
