Russian paper denounces 'gagging move'
An editor on a Russian newspaper owned by the exiled business tycoon, Boris Berezovsky, has been summoned for questioning on Monday by the Moscow prosecutor in connection with slander allegations. The editor, Igor Zotov, works for Nezavisimaya Gazeta and is accused of defaming a number of Moscow judges. The newspaper published the summons - sent as a fax from the prosecutor's office - on its front page and denounced the criminal investigation of Mr Zotov as a further manoeuvre by the authorities to gag media criticism. It drew comparisons with the tussle over the future of the TV-6 channel with a group of dissident journalists led by Yevgeny Kiselyov. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
