Police investigate Malik pool tragedy
Daniel Williams in firefighter's uniform
Daniel Williams finished his training a fortnight ago
A police investigation is continuing following the death in actor Art Malik's swimming pool of his daughter's boyfriend.

Daniel Williams, 23, was attending 21st birthday celebrations of Mr Malik's daughter Jessica at the family home in Surbiton, south-west London, on Thursday.

The newly-qualified firefighter, who lived nearby, was found unconscious on Friday morning in the marquee-covered pool and pronounced dead at hospital.

Following a surprise party at a hotel, some of the guests returned to the Malik home and swam in the pool but all except Mr Williams eventually left.

Detectives are awaiting the results of toxicology tests to help establish whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Officers searched the house and some people, and removed various "unspecified items".

Swimming trunks

Detective Inspector David Way said it was not yet clear what might have led to the drowning.

The victim was found wearing swimming trunks by party guests.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious and say it appears to be a "tragic incident".

On Friday Mr Malik, star of films including True Lies and A Passage to India, spoke of the "deepest sympathy" he had for Mr Williams' family.

The actor said all those involved had co-operated with police at all stages and would continue to do so.

His daughter, who had been seeing Mr Williams for seven months, was "clearly upset and distressed", Mr Malik added.

Mr Williams' family said they were "all completely devastated" by the tragedy.

"Daniel loved life and was loved so much by lots of people and we can never fill the gap we are left with," they said in a statement released through police.
