Three dead in Kashmir garrison attack

The Indian army says two militants and a soldier were killed when militants tried to storm an army camp in Indian-adminstered Kashmir.

An army spokesman said three militants shot dead a sentry at a checkpoint outisde the army brigade headquarters at Tregham in the frontier district of Kupwara.

He said the army engaged them in heavy fire, preventing what was apparently a suicide attack.

Two militants were killed and a third escaped.

The Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen militant group said it had carried out the attack. It said the two dead militants were from Pakistan-adminstered Kashmir while the third, who escaped, was a local resident.
