Screen and singing legends mourned
Harrison had a long battle with cancer
Hollywood and the world's entertainment industry said farewell to a host of its best loved stars in 2001.
From Jack Lemmon to George Harrison the year saw many talented people pass away. In the music industry the death of former Beatle Harrison in November was one of the saddest moments of the year. The guitarist lost his long battle to cancer at the age of 58.
The 22-year-old had been tipped as a major star on the big screen as well, having been offered parts in the two Matrix sequels. Two veteran music legends also passed away in 2001. Crooner Perry Como died aged 88 in May after 50 years in the entertainment business, while Blues star John Lee Hooker died at the age of 83 in June. One of the legends of the punk rock era, Joey Ramone, died of lymphatic cancer in a New York hospital at the age of 49 in April.
Screen legends In the world of acting double Oscar winner Lemmon, who starred in Some Like it Hot and Grumpy Old Men, died at the age of 76 in June. The world also said goodbye to Zorba the Greek star Anthony Quinn. US screen star of the 1940s and 50s Dorothy McGuire faded to black aged 85, while France's entertainment world said goodbye to film star Jean-Pierre Aumont who died in January aged 90.
Some of Britain's most loved stars also moved on in 2001. Former Goon Show star, singer and veteran comedian Sir Harry Secombe, passed away in April at the age of 79, as well as Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, who died of a heart attack aged just 49. Four Weddings and a Funeral star Charlotte Coleman died from a massive asthma attack in November. She was aged just 33. Ted Rogers, the former host of game show 3-2-1, died in May and just a month later veteran Carry On actress Joan Sims also passed away.
