Man remanded over his mother's death
The body of Afryl Burr was found with stab wounds
An unemployed man has been remanded in custody after appearing at a special court in south Wales on New Year's Day charged with the murder of his mother.
Darren Burr, 30, is also accused of the attempted murder of two police officers. Dressed in a blue shirt, and wearing large gold earrings, shaven-headed Mr Burr appeared before a special sitting of Cwmbran magistrates. There was no application for bail.
Four hours later, the two police officers were stabbed as they tried to stop a man during a routine check on the road to Abertysswg in Rhymney. One officer was released from hospital on Sunday after suffering stab wounds to the chest. The other, who was stabbed in the stomach, is in a satisfactory condition in hospital. Mrs Burr was found dead on the kitchen floor by daughter daughter Rachel, 25, after she failed to answer the telephone. Unemployed Darren Burr is the eldest of divorcee Mrs Burr's four adopted children. He was reported to be walking near Cefn Golau cemetery on the Tredegar to Abertysswg Road carrying two knives when the officers from Rhymney station approached him. Gwent Police brought the charges after questioning him at Newport Central police station on Sunday and Monday. Detectives have also set up an incident room at Ebbw Vale Police Station as their inquiries continue into the murder and attempted murders.
