Man in court over mother's murder

An unemployed man is due to appear in court in south Wales on New Year's Day charged with the murder of his mother.

Darren Burr is also accused of the attempted murder of two police officers. .

He is due to appear before a special sitting of Cwmbran magistrates.

Fifty-eight-year-old Afryl Burr, a mother of four, was found by her daughter at her home in Queen Victoria Street, Tredegar, at 2000GMT on Saturday. She had been stabbed.

Four hours later, the two police officers were stabbed as they tried to stop a man during a routine check on the road to Abertysswg in Rhymney.

One officer was released from hospital on Sunday after suffering stab wounds to the chest.

The other, who was stabbed in the stomach, is in a satisfactory condition in hospital.

Mrs Burr was found dead on the kitchen floor by daughter daughter Rachel, 25, after she failed to answer the telephone.

Unemployed Darren Burr, the eldest of divorcee Mrs Burr's four adopted children, is due to appear on the charges at a special court before Newport magistrates on Tuesday

He was reported to be walking near Cefn Golau cemetery on the Tredegar to Abertysswg Road carrying two knives when the officers from Rhymney station approached him.

Gwent Police brought the charges after questioning him at Newport Central police station on Sunday and Monday.

Detectives have also set up an incident room at Ebbw Vale Police Station as their inquiries continue into the murder and attempted murders.
