A 30-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his mother and attempting to kill two police officers in south Wales.

Afryl Burr, 58, was found by her daughter at Queen Victoria Street, Tredegar, at 2000GMT Saturday. She had been stabbed.

Hours later, the two police officers were stabbed as they tried to stop a man during a routine check on the road to Abertyswgg in Rhymney.

One officer was released from hospital on Sunday after suffering stab wounds to the chest - the other, who was stabbed in the stomach, is still in a satisfactory condition in hospital.

Mrs Burr was found dead on the kitchen floor by daughter youngest daughter Rachel, 20, after she failed to answer the telephone.

Unemployed Darren Burr, the eldest of divorcee Mrs Burr's four adopted children, is due to appear on the charges at a special court before Newport magistrates on Tuesday.

He was reported to be walking near Cefn Golau cemetery on the Tredegar to Abertyswgg Road when the officers approached him.

Gwent Police brought the charges after questioning him at Newport Central police station on Sunday and Monday.

Detective Superintendent Alan Coates said it was a "tragic incident."

"This has been an horrendous incident for Mrs Burr's family," he said.

"Family liaison officers have been appointed to help them come to terms with their loss."

Det Supt Coates added the officers' families had also experienced a worrying time.

He issued an appeal to the general public for information regarding the last known movements of Mrs Burr.

Neighbour Carole Hayden said: "It is a terrible. I've known Afryl for more than 20 years.

"She has four grown-up children and seven grandchildren - I know they have all been around for Christmas.

"Everyone here is in a state of shock.

"She was a very kind person who doted on her family."

Gwent Police set up an incident room at Ebbw Vale Police Station as their inquiries continue into the incidents.
