Islam meets Africa
Soldier patrols following riots between religious groups
The war between the US and its allies, and al-Qaeda, has touched many parts of the world. New York and Washington on September 11th, of course, and Afghanistan since then.
But to what extent has the conflict spread, throughout the world, to raise tensions between Christians and Muslims? Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation, and a place very prone to violent Christian-Muslim clashes. As our west Africa correspondent, Mark Doyle, reports, the war in Afghanistan has fanned Nigeria's smouldering religious tensions. He went to northern Nigeria, home to most Nigerian Muslims, where Osama Bin Laden is revered simply because he has taken on the might of the West. He begins his report in the historic Islamic city of Kano.
