Both officers needed hospital treatment but one has since been allowed home.

He was arrested as part of the investigation into the attempted murder of the two police officers.

The man was reported walking near Cefn Golau cemetery on the Tredegar to Abertyswgg road when the officers approached him.

He is also being held at Newport Central Police Station in connection with the murder of Mrs Burr.

Detective Superintendent Alan Coates said it was a "tragic incident".

"This has been an horrendous incident for Mrs Burr's family. Family liaison officers have been appointed to help them come to terms with their loss."

Det Supt Coates added the officers' families had also experienced a worrying time.

He issued an appeal to the general public for information regarding the last known movements of Mrs Burr.

'State of shock'

Neighbour Carole Hayden said: "It is a terrible. I've known Afryl for more than 20 years.

"She has four grown up children and seven grandchildren - I know they have all been around for Christmas.

"Everyone here is in a state of shock.

"She was a very kind person who doted on her family."

Her children Rachel, Kayleigh, Darren and Tyrone were all being comforted by family.

Gwent Police have set up an incident room at Ebbw Vale Police Station as their inquiries continue into the incidents.
