Van kills six in New York
Victims were reportedly trapped between vehicles
Six people have been killed in central New York when they were hit by a delivery van outside the famous Macy's department store.
A witness said the van ploughed into waiting pedestrians before striking a bus, trapping some people between the two vehicles.
The accident happened on Thursday in the middle of Herald Square, a midtown district filled with shoppers and used as the site of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving parade. Police said the 77-year-old van driver, who was double-parked, had been ordered to move on. The van abruptly moved forward, hitting a crowd of pedestrians before colliding with a bus. Witness M S Thapa told the Associated Press news agency that the bus had been trying to turn right before the accident. He said there were no skidding sounds before the van hit the bus, just screams from people and then a crash.
Of the six who died, four were pronounced dead at the scene, while the others died in hospital. One of the victims was a 15-year-old boy. The New York Police Department said that the 77-year-old driver was being questioned.
