'Birmingham Six' man rejects pay out
The Birmingham Six were released in 1991
One of the Birmingham Six has turned down an offer of more than £500,000 in compensation for the 16 years he spent in prison.
Paddy Hill said the money is not enough and he plans take his claim to the High Court to get the offer increased. He was convicted in 1975, along with five others, for the murder of 22 people in two Birmingham pubs. The Court of Appeal quashed the convictions in 1991.
"I am not happy with some parts of the assessment," he said. "I have been trying to get an answer from the authorities since July. "I said this when I was in prison, when it comes down to money the Queen hasn't got enough money to compensate one of the Birmingham Six never mind all six because you can't equate it to money." Hazel Keirle, of the Miscarriages of Justice Organisation (Mojo), said: "The Home Office has not accepted liability from Mr Hill's false imprisonment. "The government must accept responsibility when people are wrongfully convicted." The five who make up the remainder of the Birmingham Six are still considering the compensation offer made in October. Mr Hill now plans to make an application for a judicial review of the compensation order.
