Literacy programme in Burundi
The United Nations children's' agency, Unicef, and the government in Burundi have launched an education campaign in the north of the country, aimed at women and children. The UN has donated $700,000 to the government to help improve literacy rates among the population in four of the country's northern provinces. Unicef says 80% of women and children in the region cannot read or write. The head of the programme, Josephine Bangurambona, from the ministry of education, says war and parental attitudes have contributed to such low levels of literacy.
