Polish PM promises tough measures

The new Prime Minister of Poland, Leszek Miller, has pledged to stabilise the country's public finances, which he said were on the edge of bankruptcy.

In an address presenting his government's programme to parliament, Mr Miller said he would take a series of strict measures, including a reduction in public spending.

He also announced a freeze on salaries of ministers and central government workers.

Mr Miller criticised the previous government for incompetence and for wasting public money.

On Tuesday, the new government approved budget cuts of more than $2bn.
