Man killed for 'a few pounds'
Police car
Thirty detectives are investigating
A man who died after a "horrific" knife attack may have been murdered for "just a few pounds", say police.

Anthony Murphy, 47, was found lying in Castlebeck Avenue, Sheffield, by a lorry driver at 5.15am on Tuesday.

He was taken to the city's Northern General Hospital where he later died from loss of blood and internal injuries.

Mr Murphy had been stabbed in the face, head, abdomen and chest.

Knife found

Detective Superintendent Kevin Hardy, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "It would appear that he told the lorry driver he had been mugged.

"We are concerned that someone could commit an offence like this for the sake of what could have amounted to just a few pounds. The injuries he sustained were horrific."

Mr Hardy said a wallet containing credit cards but no cash was found about 200 yards away from where Mr Murphy was lying.

A knife was also recovered from the scene.

Mr Hardy said said it was possible the attack took place where the wallet was found - near the Castlebeck Community Centre.

A team of 30 detectives is working on the investigation and police are appealing for witnesses.
