Irish president visits Uganda

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, has held talks in Kampala with his Irish counterpart, Mary McAleese, who is on a week-long visit.

They discussed Irish development programmes in Uganda, such as those in the education and health sectors, as well as Irish missionary work in the country.

After the talks, Mrs McAleese commended the Ugandan leadership for containing the spread of the HIV virus that causes AIDS, and for moves to make Uganda a peaceful and prosperous country.

She did not say whether Ireland would back Mr Museveni's request to donors to increase the country's defence budget.
