Guinea Bissau president attacks striking judges
The president of Guinea-Bissau, Kumba Yala, has accused striking members of the country's judiciary of acting unconstitutionally. Lawyers and judges started their action after last month's sacking by President Yala of all the country's Supreme Court judges. Opponents of the president say has since installed new judges who support his views. They say the move is unconstitutional. On Tuesday the parliament approved a resolution supporting the striking judges and accusing the president of acting unlawfully. But President Yala said in a television address that he had acted to protect the constitution and accused his opponents of undermining his efforts. Correspondents say the dispute is the latest stage of a power struggle between the president and opposition parties for control of state institutions. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
