Murder victim's mother seeks justice
Ricky Haywood was shot at his Southampton flat
The ailing mother of a jeweller shot dead at point blank range 12 years ago has spoken of her sense of injustice that her son's killer remains at large.
Phyllis Haywood, 78, has offered £50,000, paid for by selling her home, for the conviction of whoever killed her son, Ricky. Mr Haywood, 36, was shot five times in the bathroom of the flat above the shop where he worked in Shirley High Street, Southampton. The murder took place in October 1989 and since then detectives have interviewed more than 11,000 people.
No one has ever been charged with his death. Mrs Haywood said she had felt no peace of mind since the killing. "I just want to know who did this to Ricky," she said. Detectives believe their main hope lies with someone coming forward with information or with unexpected forensic evidence. Hampshire police spokesman Kevin Briscowe said: "The file is continually reviewed." And he added: "We continue to hope that someone will come forward with new information. "Feelings can change over time and it could be that someone decides to talk to us about this crime." Mr Haywood was shot five times at close range. At the time of the murder it was thought he could have been the victim of a professional killer.
