US comedy America's Sweethearts, boasting a stellar cast, has failed to topple teen comedy American Pie 2 from the top of the UK box office chart.

The sequel to the 1999 smash hit, starring Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan, has continued to perform strongly taking £2.8m in its second weekend.

The high-profile America's Sweethearts, which features Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones and John Cusack, took £1.7m over the same three-day period.

Jeepers Creepers has been billed as the scariest movie for 10 years
Audiences flocked to the low-budget horror flick Jeepers Creepers after it was billed as the scariest movie to come out of America in 10 years.

Box office receipts for its opening weekend totalled £1.5m, placing it at number three in the chart.

Animated adventure Atlantis: The Lost Empire has leapt up to number four in the charts. Previously it had been on limited release on just 40 screens and entered the chart at number 13.

Voiced by Michael J Fox and James Garner, the Disney cartoon has taken £1.2m on its nationwide release.

Thriller

Musical extravaganza Moulin Rouge has slipped three places to number five.

Over the three-day weekend period it took £690,000, seven weeks after its release date.

French feelgood film Amelie is at number six, having taken £414,830, followed by code-breaking thriller Enigma.

Steven Spielberg's epic film about the future AI (Artificial Intelligence) is at number eight, taking £254,570 and British football comedy Mike Bassett: England Manager is at number nine.

The only other new entry in the top 15 is the French mythical period drama Brotherhood of the Wolf. It took £123,245 in from the 75 screens it is showing in.
