Eleven dead in Kashmir violence
Police in Indian-administered Kashmir say at least 11 people have been killed in a string of incidents in the region since Monday night.
Police said two armed militants were killed when security forces challenged rebels in the southern district of Anantnag. One civilian was killed during the ensuing gun battle. In the neighbouring area of Tral, border guards say they shot dead the district commander of the Hizbul-Mujahideen militant separatist group. In the Doda district two Muslim youths are reported to have been killed during an exchange of gunfire between Islamic militants and security forces. And in separate incidents in the southern district of Poonch, another four militants and an Indian soldier were killed. More than thirty thousand people have been killed in Indian-administered Kashmir since the insurgency broke out twelve years ago. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
