Aluminium strike ends in Mozambique

Trade unions in Mozambique have called off a strike at the giant aluminium smelting plant, Mozal, after the company agreed to take back all 468 workers it sacked for going on strike.

About half the workforce walked out at the beginning of the month, demanding higher pay and benefits.

Last week, President Chissano appealed to them to return to work.

A trade union leader at the plant, Isaac Nhakokoma, told the BBC that they had not won any of their specific demands.

Mozal, which is largely owned by British, Japanese and South African companies, began production late last year.
