Tenancy laws come under review
One in three people in England and Wales rent
The Law Commission is drawing up proposals to simplify the law governing landlords and tenants.
The current system is chaotic and confusing for both sides, according to the commission, which reviews legislation and recommends reform. The one in three people in England and Wales who live in rented accommodation are currently covered by one of 13 different types of tenancy agreement. And the commission says the system needs to be streamlined to benefit both landlords and tenants. But the changes are still being formulated and will not take effect for at least three years. The commission will also review the law relating to harassment and unlawful eviction. It says it needs to be clarified so people have a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities.
