Inquiry call over police rapist case
Adam Carruthers was jailed for 12 years
An MSP has called for a public inquiry into the case of a Scottish police inspector who was found guilty of raping two women.
Adam Carruthers was jailed for 12 years in June after being found guilty of the offences - which took place between 1993 and 1996. The 38-year-old inspector with Dumfries and Galloway Police was convicted of subjecting one of his victims to a prolonged attack and of raping another woman on a number of occasions.
A jury also convicted Carruthers of other charges of indecent assault against the two women and of making a threatening telephone call. However, further investigations have suggested that there may have been more victims. The BBC's Frontline Scotland programme, which will be broadcast on Tuesday, reveals that up to 10 women had also come forward anonymously to the Rape Crisis Centre, alleging rape or abuse at his hands. The programme has also learned that Carruthers' sexual abuse may date as far back as 1983. Local Labour MSP Elaine Murray is pressing for a public inquiry. Mrs Murray said: "It looks as if Adam Carruthers is probably one of Scotland's most serious sex offenders. "It wasn't just that he was a police officer who happened to do those things, he used the fact that he was a senior police officer in order to abuse women."
Carruthers stalked a single parent whilst he was serving as an officer in Langholm. Kirsty Green said: "It was horrible and it was terrifying. It got to a certain point when I thought 'no I can't take this no more'. "I wanted to just stand in a room and scream and scream for somebody to listen to me, for somebody to help me." The trial at the High Court in Edinburgh heard that Carruthers, from Penpont in Dumfries, brutally raped one of his victims - known only as Mrs X - several times while on police duty. He overpowered his second victim Mrs Y and raped her on the floor as she cried out in pain. Lord Dawson told Carruthers that he was a "total disgrace to the uniform he wore". You can watch Tuesday's Frontline Scotland programme at 2235 BST on BBC Scotland. |
