Peru asks Japan to hand over Fujimori
Peru has urged Japan to hand over the disgraced former president, Alberto Fujimori, who fled to Tokyo last year at the height of a corruption scandal. The Peruvian president, Alejandro Toledo, conveyed the extradition request to the Japanese prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, at the Apec summit in Shanghai. Mr Toledo said Mr Fujimori, who was stripped of the presidency by Peru's congress, should be judged by the Peruvian authorities. The former president is the son of Japanese immigrants and was granted Japanese citizenship last December. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
