Chinese journalist wins press freedom award

A Chinese journalist who was imprisoned after he wrote articles exposing corruption has been given an international press award.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) chose Jiang Weiping as one of four recipients of its International Press Freedom Award.

Mr Jiang was arrested last December in the northeastern city of Dalian in Liaoning Province after he wrote several articles about alleged corruption involving high level government officials, including the provincial governor, Bo Xilai.

The CPJ says Mr Jiang was brought to trial in September but no verdict has yet been announced.

It says the awards will be presented at a dinner ceremony in New York on 20 November but it did not say who would receive the award on Mr Jiang's behalf.
