Carey calls for 'deeper dialogue'

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, has spoken of the need for "deeper dialogue" between Muslims and Christians as the bombing of Afghanistan continues.

Dr Carey was speaking to the two religious communities on a visit to a mosque on Tuesday.

He said the present conflict had nothing to do with religion as he met Muslim leaders at the Suleymaniye mosque in Shoreditch, east London.

"What we want to do is to deepen the dialogue between Christian leaders and Muslim leaders in the UK," said Dr Carey.

"We want to signal that the present conflict has nothing to do whatsoever with religion."

The Archbishop toured the mosque with Bishop of Rochester, the Right Reverend Michael Nazir-Ali, and Bishop of Stepney, the Right Reverend John Sentamu.

The group met Muslim community leaders for private discussions afterwards, at the UK Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre, next door to the mosque.

The Prince of Wales visited the same mosque, which serves a mainly Turkish community, last month.
