Trial of Anwar's lawyer postponed
The trial of one of the defence lawyers for the jailed former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, has been postponed for technical reasons.
The lawyer, Karpal Singh, was charged with sedition in January last year after alleging in court during Anwar's trial that there may have been a plot by highly placed people to poison his client. The human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has said that the prosecution has serious implications for the independence of lawyers. The trial of Karpal Singh, who is a senior figure in the opposition Democratic Action Party, will begin in January next year. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
