Fans face Charity Shield charges
The Millennium Stadium, Cardiff
Police said violence broke out around the stadium
Eleven Cardiff City fans are set to appear in court following trouble at Sunday's Charity Shield football match at the Millennium Stadium.

The supporters are due to appear in front of Cardiff magistrates charged with offences, which took place before the match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

Man in handcuffs
Twenty-two people were arrested by police
South Wales Police believe it was Cardiff City fans who were responsible for orchestrating the violence. Twenty-two were arrested in total.

A Manchester United fan was taken to hospital before kick-off for treatment after he was slashed with a carpet knife.

Two boys, aged 11 and 13, were later arrested.

Several other fans who were arrested on Sunday are due to appear in court on Wednesday.

Cardiff fans were celebrating on Saturday night after their team beat Wycombe Wanderers in the opening clash of the season.

Several disturbances

The first disturbance on Saturday night broke out in St Mary Street at its junction with Wood Street at around 2000BST, and was followed by another near the Poet's Corner pub on Clare Road at around 2220BST.

Police said they dealt with several disturbances which were believed to have involved Cardiff City and Manchester United fans.

Two were arrested for assault, three for drug-related offences and 10 for public order offences.

One police constable was taken to hospital with a broken arm and a dog handler suffered cuts and bruises.

Officers have said the outbursts may have been organised by fans claiming to support Cardiff.

Seven hundred officers were drafted in on Sunday to police what was an otherwise successful fixture at the Millennium Stadium.

Chief Superintendent Gerry Toms is to meet representatives from Cardiff City later in the week to discuss the violence.
