Telecoms firm axes jobs

RSL Com provides 'total communications packages'
A telecoms firm has made more than 100 staff redundant just days after another company in the same Hampshire town shed hundreds of jobs.

Basingstoke-based RSL Com called in administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers on Monday, after the company's board failed to find a buyer.

Although the administrator believes a new buyer will be found the end of the week, "well over" 100 staff have lost their jobs.

"Most companies in this industry are failing at the moment. But we now have got several offers on the table and hope to sell this company by the end of the week," said a PwC spokesman.

Millions owed

Earlier this month Dolphin Telecommunications, which has its UK headquarters in Basingstoke, made up to 400 people redundant after administrators were called in.

Half of Dolphin's UK workforce was laid off and chief executive Steve Evans lost his job on 1 August.

Firms claiming to be owed money by Dolphin's UK arm include network giant Nokia, which has bills totalling £50m.

Dolphin, which is owned by the Canadian telecoms company TIW, employs 1,400 people across Europe.
