Robbers escape empty-handed
Two armed men who threatened staff at a bank in south Yorkshire have escaped empty-handed.

Armed officers surrounded the branch of the NatWest in High Street, Wombwell, Barnsley and the area was sealed off shortly after 0900 BST on Monday.

Police were called after three female employees arriving for work were confronted by the men.

It is believed the raiders had broken in overnight and were disturbed by the women.

'So shocked'

One of the women was threatened by a man armed with a knife and a gun.

Two of the women managed to run to a nearby cafe, while the third ran to a police station to raise the alarm.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "Officers have carried out a third search but no-one is in the building.

"The premises were first of all searched by a dog and then by a team of armed officers.

"The three women were unharmed physically but were so shocked that they needed treatment from paramedics."

The men were wearing dirty workmen's clothing.

Police are appealing for any witnesses as the search continues.
