Police 'anger' at pool protest's handling
There were violent scenes as the pool was closed
Reports that police officers involved in clashes with protesters at a Scottish swimming pool are planning to sue their force have been played down.
But the Police Federation has confirmed that complaints have been received from officers in Strathclyde Police that they were apparently denied the use of riot gear. There were angry scenes at Govanhill Pool, in Glasgow's south side, during the week when police moved in to help sheriff officers bring an occupation of the building to an end. One senior officer described the violence as the most sustained and vicious he had seen in more than 25-years service.
It is now understood that some of the officers on duty at the pool have lodged complaints with the Strathclyde branch of the Police Federation. A federation spokesman said widespread frustration over the handling of the protest has been expressed - most particularly the decision not to issue protective riot gear. But the spokesman denied any members was considering pursuing legal action to win compensation from the Force. Strathclyde Police said that if a complaint is received it will be investigated. |
