Former Romanian King wants castle back

Romania's former King Michael is seeking the recovery of a castle and several villas confiscated by the country's former communist rulers.

The former head of state has lodged an official request with the authorities in Sinaia for the return of Peles castle and its estate, or compensation of $20m.

The estate in the Carpathian mountains became a museum under communist rule after King Michael was forced to abdicate in 1947.

He lives in exile in Switzerland but is currently visiting his homeland where he has recovered several properties in the capital, Bucharest.

President Ion Iliescu in May formally recognized Michael as a former head of state - a status which entitles him to several benefits including an official residence.
