Kenya corruption bill falters

The Kenyan Government has failed to muster enough support in parliament votes to pass a law aimed at fighting official corruption.

The bill was supposed to pave the way for the re-establishment of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority, as demanded by the International Monetary Fund. The body was disbanded in December after a court ruling that its powers were unconstitutional. Correspondents say the bill's failure jeopardises future international loans.

The IMF and other donors froze all financial support earlier this year on the grounds that the government was dragging its feet on privatization and anti-corruption legislation.

The bill is to be presented again next week because under Kenya's parliamentary rules it got enough votes to be reconsidered.
