Taiwan bids again to join UN

Taiwan is making another attempt to be accepted into the United Nations with the support of a group of its allies.

A statement from the Foreign Ministry in Taipei said 10 countries, mostly African and Latin American, had submitted a fresh proposal to the UN to reconsider its ban on Taiwanese membership.

Previous attempts in the past eight years have failed, having been blocked by China which regards Taiwan as a breakaway province.
