Blow for Mexico airport

Experts in Mexico say both proposed sites for the construction of a new airport for Mexico City would have a negative environmental impact.

The study, by researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, said building on either site would lead to water pollution, dwindling water supplies, and the generation of enormous amounts of rubbish.

Correspondents say the report is likely to anger environmental groups; they had hoped the experts would come down firmly against one of the sites - in the Texcoco region, about 18km from the capital - which is the main habitat for tens-of thousands of migratory birds.

Mexico City's current airport is operating at maximum capacity, and the two sites being examined appear to be the only feasible options for the much-needed increased capacity.
