Chad president sworn in

The Chadian President, Idriss Deby, has been sworn in for a second five-year term.

Seven African leaders attended the ceremony at the state palace in the capital, Ndjamena.

Mr Deby won elections in May with 67% of the vote.

But the six defeated candidates who challenged him in the poll have have accused him of rigging.

An attempt to organise a protest on the eve of the ceremony was banned by the authorities.

Mr Deby, a former army officer, first came to power after he overthrew the former ruler, Hissene Habre, in 1990. Mr Habre is currently living in exile in Senegal; Chadian human rights groups say he should return to answer charges for crimes against humanity.
