Curfew after Kashmir attack
Hindu groups blame Pakistan for the violence
A curfew has been imposed in the city of Jammu in Indian-administered Kashmir after 11 people were killed when Islamic militants attacked the railway station.
The militants were thought to be targeting Indian troops on board a train which had just pulled in to the station. The attack comes against a background of rising violence against Hindus in Kashmir following the failure of summit talks between India and Pakistan last month in Agra. Tense situation Troops and police were patrolling the streets of Jammu, a Hindu-dominated city, amid concerns that radical Hindu groups planned to hold demonstrations against the state and central governments for failing to protect them.
A police official described the atmosphere in the city as "tense but under control". Opposition parties walked out of parliament in Delhi in protest at the killings, saying the government was failing to protect civilians in Kashmir. Security concern The government has convened a high-level meeting to discuss security measures, and has summoned the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir state, Farooq Abdullah. Jammu was already on heightened alert after earlier attacks in the area. No group has as yet said it carried out the attack at the station. About a dozen Kashmiri militant groups are fighting for independence from India, which controls about 45% of the region. India accuses Pakistan of sponsoring militant attacks in Kashmir, but Pakistan says it provides only moral and diplomatic support. The territory has been at the centre of two wars between them since 1947. |
