UN to tighten Afghanistan sanctions enforcement

The United Nations Security Council is finalising the details of a new resolution designed to tighten the monitoring and enforcement of UN sanctions against the Taleban authorities in Afghanistan.

The resolution calls for the establishment of a five-member monitoring team, as well as a sanctions enforcement team which would be deployed along Afghanistan's border with neighbouring countries.

The BBC UN Correspondent says the new resolution is in response to reports that UN sanctions against the Taleban are being abused.

Our correspondent says the biggest challenge the field team will face is how to police a border that runs for more than 5,000 kilometres through some of the world's most rugged terrain.

A final decision on the resolution may not come before Monday.
