Five dead in fresh Jamaica violence
Police in Jamaica say five people have been shot dead in fresh violence in the capital, Kingston, in the same area where 25 people were killed earlier this month. Local residents said the shootings were carried out by members of one gang seeking revenge on the followers of another group blamed for this month's disturbances. Police have been deployed to the area in an attempt to restore calm. The latest violence comes as the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, prepares to depart on an official visit to Jamaica this weekend. It also coincides with a new government campaign intended to restore Jamaica's international image as a safe tourist destination. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
