More arrests in Peru corruption scandal
Police in Peru have arrested two more close associates of the former President, Alberto Fujimori. They say a former attorney-general, Blanca Nelida Colan, faces charges of protecting Mr Fujimori's head of intelligence, Vladimiro Montesinos, when allegations of wrongdoing were made against him. Mr Montesinos is himself now awaiting trial after being extradited from Venezuela. He is accused of human rights abuses, corruption and weapons trafficking. The former head of Mr Fujimori's election office, Jose Portillo, has also been arrested on charges of falsifying a million voter signatures during the Peruvian presidential campaign last year. Mr Fujimori, who is currently in voluntary exile in Japan, resigned during a corruption investigation following his election to a third term of office. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
