In pictures: Protester mourned

Nearly 1,000 people have attended the funeral in Genoa of Carlo Giuliani, who was shot dead by an Italian policeman during the recent G8 summit.

His parents asked for a simple funeral ceremony, as their 23-year-old son would have liked.

Mr Guiliani was the first fatality since the anti-globalization movement began staging protests at world meetings in 1999.

The coffin was wrapped in the flag of AS Roma - Mr Guiliani's favourite football team.

Hundreds of people gathered at a cemetery in Genoa to pay their respects.

His death has shocked Genoa.

It has also caused intense anger.

"In his short life, Carlo has given us many things," his father said.

The previous day thousands demonstrated throughout Italy against police violence at the summit.
