Four jailed for Gothenburg riots
Rioting in Gothenburg
The violence caused millions of dollars of damage
Four more people have been sentenced to prison for their roles in last month's rioting at the EU summit in Gothenburg.

A 32-year-old Briton, a 25-year-old German and two Swedes, aged 20 and 38, were each given jail terms ranging from nine to 18 months.

More than 90 people were hurt during the summit in the Swedish city, as police fought running battles with anarchists, anti-globalists and other protesters. Damage was estimated at more than $4m.

The 20-year-old Swede, who the court said had spent several weeks before the 15-16 June summit planning subversive activities, was initially sentenced to three years in jail, but the term was reduced in recognition of his age.

The German and the Briton were named as Jesse-Bjoern Buckler and Paul Robinson, a 33-year-old librarian from London.

Both men would be expelled from Sweden and banned from re-entering the country for several years after serving their sentences, the court said.

Shot and jailed

At one stage in the protests, Swedish officers, apparently overwhelmed by the scale of the disturbances, opened fire with live ammunition, shooting three protesters.

One of those shot, a German teenager, was the first rioter to be jailed, ten days ago. He received a six-month sentence for his part in the unrest.

He was found guilty of throwing stones at police officers. Videotape shown to the court in the Swedish city showed him running and throwing objects at the police.

Fourteen others have since been prosecuted, handed sentences ranging from six months to 30 months in prison.

The summit attracted 25,000 demonstrators, who voiced their anger at the polices of US President George W Bush who joined the summit, the EU and globalisation.

Many held peaceful rallies, but riots forced the cancellation of a summit dinner, and some national delegations had to switch hotels.
